Atlasspinner♀

Der Atlasspinner ist der zweitgrößte Schmetterling der Erde. Die Flügelspannweite dieses Nachfalters kann sagenhafte 30 cm erreichen. Die Weibchen werden größer als die Männchen. Die braungemusterten Flügel sind gefenstert und die Spitzen imitieren Schlangenköpfe um Feinde abzuschrecken. Er lebt in den tropischen und subtropischen Wäldern Südostasiens, Chinas und Indiens. Seine Lebenserwartung im Imaginalstadium beträgt nur zwei Wochen.

 

The Atlas moth is the second large moth in the world. Its wingspan can reach almost 12“. The females are bigger than the males. The wing pattern in shades of brown is centrally windowed and the wingtips resemble to snake heads to protect from predators. The habitat is tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, China and India. In its imaginal stage the lifespan of two weeks is very short.
