Hirschkäfer elaphus

Dieser Hirschkäfer aus Sumatra gehört wohl zu den prächtigsten seiner Art. Der glänzende Körper wirkt wie aus Metall gegossen. Schon im Römischen Reich wurden die männlichen Geweihe von Hirschkäfern als Amulett getragen. Mit ihren überlangen Mandibeln fechten die Männchen Revierkämpe aus, in denen sie versuchen ihren Gegner auf den Rücken zu werfen.

This stag beetle might be one the most magnificent of its kind. Its shiny body seems to be made of pure metal. Already at the time of the Roman Empire stag beetle horns were worn as jewelry. Male beetles use their over long mandibles and try to roll their opponents on their backs.
